GARY MOORE - Still Got The Blues (ASL?, Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, & More)

Todays song is Still Got The Blues by Gary Moore. Gary Moore Robert William Gary Moore) was a virtuoso musician born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is widely recognized as one of the most expressive and technically gifted rock and blues guitarists of all time. Long before he became a defining figure of modern electric blues, Moore spent the 1970s and 1980s tearing through the hard rock and heavy metal scenes. He famously served multiple chaotic stints as the lead guitarist for the legendary Irish rock band Thin Lizzy and fronted his own high-octane solo metal acts.

By 1989, Moore felt completely creatively unfulfilled by the rigid, commercial expectations of the '80s hair-metal scene. While jamming absentmindedly on an acoustic guitar in his kitchen late one night, he started playing a slow, traditional blues progression. He turned to his tour manager and said, "This is what I want to do. I'm stopping the rock stuff." Despite his record label's intense fear that a blues record would tank his career, Still Got the Blues went on to become the most commercially successful album of his entire life, going multi-platinum.

This song was released as a single in April 1990. It served as the titular anchor for Gary Moore's blockbuster eighth studio album, Still Got The Blues, that dropped just a month earlier on March 26, 1990.

The otherworldly, crying tone heard on the track was achieved using a historic instrument. Moore recorded the song using "Greeny," a legendary 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard that he had bought directly from his close friend and mentor, Peter Green (the founding guitarist of Fleetwood Mac). The guitar's neck pickup was famously wired backward by accident at the factory, creating a unique, out-of-phase "nasal" honk when played in the middle switch position. Moore eventually had to sell the legendary guitar due to financial hardships; today, it is owned and played on tour by Metallica's Kirk Hammett.
