Todays song is Coastline by Hollow Coves. The band is an Australian indie-folk duo that formed in Brisbane, Queensland, in 2013. The project is entirely driven by singer-songwriters Matt Carins and Ryan Henderson, who are internationally celebrated for their earthy melodies and tight-knit vocal harmonies. Before their music racked up hundreds of millions of streams worldwide, neither Matt nor Ryan pursued music full-time. Matt was grinding as a local woodworker and carpenter, while Ryan was studying to become a civil engineer. Music was originally just a casual passion project until their early SoundCloud uploads unexpectedly went viral across the globe.
This song was released as a single on November 23, 2016, and later served as the opening track of Hollow Coves' debut breakout EP, Wanderlust. Bandmates Matt Carins and Ryan Henderson wrote the song after discovering they shared a deep, mutual nostalgia for a road trip along Australia's sprawling, pristine coasts. They wanted to write a piece of music that completely simulated the warm feeling of zipping past crystal-blue water with the ocean breeze filling your lungs.
In a fascinating studio revelation, the band shared that the ambient, dreamlike drone that sits beneath the entire song is actually a Justin Bieber song slowed down like a thousand times. Their music producer had stumbled across a viral YouTube trend utilizing an audio stretching software called PaulStretch. Intrigued by the texture, he pitched the sound up to form the ethereal bed for "Coastline". As the band jokingly remarked, "If you love the song but you don't love Justin Bieber, turns out you actually do love Justin Bieber."
This is such a mellow jam. So let's learn this one together... I'm still searching for an ASL cover - Can you make one? For now lets start learning this song on Guitar, Ukulele and Piano. Plus check out the bonus covers. Let's get in to it.
